Full-Time Streets Technician III /Supervisor
PROVIDENCE CITY PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT Streets Technician 3/Supervisor, Full-time regular position
Under general supervision from the Public Works Director, performs supervisory and professional work in the streets department in the ongoing programs/tasks necessary for the day to day operation of the City.
Essential Duties: The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by employees in this position, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Complete all work assigned through the Public Works Director. Supervise in snow removal from the streets and snow plow care and maintenance, notify office staff to order salt and ensure safety procedures. Maintain streets throughout the City, maintain culverts, assist contractor with dust seal, City cleanup in the spring, replace and install street signs as needed; repair, replace and maintain all curbs, gutters, sidewalks, drop boxes and sumps. Trim and remove trees as needed. Under direction of the cemetery Sexton; cemetery work, layout and mark grave sites for excavation, excavate and backfill graves as needed. Truck driver, snow plow driver, operate backhoe, participate in drug testing program, maintain a valid class B CDL; laborer as needed; fill out all required paperwork for the above mentioned duties. The Streets Technician 3 performs work of high difficulty that involves much independent judgment. This person will have leadership and/or supervisory responsibilities over a Streets Technician 1, Streets Technician 2, and/or seasonal and part-time employees. Perform other duties as assigned.
Selection Factors: Knowledge of: Laws, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to Providence City codes; policies and procedures established for the work system; the operations, functions, and basic English composition, spelling, and grammar; operating miscellaneous equipment. Skill in: Operating a backhoe, snow plows, other vehicles and equipment; and working with the public in emotional or negative situations. Ability to: Interpret general orders; present information clearly before the management, the public, and other employees; work independently with little or no supervision; maintain positive work relationships with other employees; communicate effectively both written and orally; evaluate programs and procedures; organize assigned work and develop effective work methods; and prepare clear, concise, accurate and informative reports; and work with the public in a pleasant, calm manner often under stressful situations.
Minimum Requirements: Must be at least 18 years of age. A high school diploma (or its equivalent) and five (5) years work experience in street maintenance, backhoe operation, snow plowing, or a closely related field. A valid Utah driver’s license will be required at time of appointment. A class B CDL is required or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire date. Computer knowledge is preferred but not required.

When working outdoors, there is the potential for exposure to dampness, fumes odors, dust dirt, rain, heat, cold, chemicals, machinery with moving parts, and loud noises; occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, dangerous situations, and heavy traffic.

While performing some of the duties of this job, the employee works in an office setting; typically sitting at a desk or table; using tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity and work for sustained periods of time maintaining a concentrated attention to detail.
Employee is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear. The employee is required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is required to use feet, ankles, legs, hands and arms to operate necessary equipment. Must be able to perform moderate to heavy physical work with prolonged standing and walking for extended periods of time, walking over rough or uneven surfaces, stretching, bending, pushing, stooping, climbing, crouching, crawling, moving, lifting, and occasionally carrying loads weighing in excess of 50 pounds, and drive a motor vehicle. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Hours: Generally Monday through Friday, approximately 40 hours per week. Periodically on-call in emergencies or weather related. Starting Wage: $14.00 to $16.00 per hour; dependent on experience and qualifications. The applicant selected will generally start at the lowest posted wage. Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and education as presented on the application and resume. Selection may be based largely upon an oral interview.
